2014 March Interclub - Sandwick

Sandwick are back to winning ways as  Joan, Garry, Ian, Brian and Glen take back the interclub title after edging ahead of Lerwick and two strong junior teams. Ian managed to go undefeated across his matches with some accurate and determined play. Joan, Garry and Glen battled well to pick up much needed wins. However their most valuable player (MVP) must go to Brian whom managed to clinch the crucial match against 4th Years  12-10 despite the efforts of a determined Craig Smith in the fifth set to win the tie.

This left 4th Years to battle against Lerwick to get back on top. Leanne Jamieson having been drafted in to make up the numbers for 4th years and showed the most improvement across the competition but was just not able to counter the deep hitting of Karen McElvie as a long five setter went to Karen. Stuart Copland 4th years MVP also had a long and spectacular 5 setter and dug deep against Billy Mycock but again it just tipped to Lerwick which would have otherwise left Stuart undefeated.  Ryan Kirk & Craig used their experience well to take their first games but were unable to adjust as Lerwick’s MVP and undefeated player John Borill and Gordon McFarlane whom both rallied well to beat experienced juniors.  However Shetland Juniors top ranked national player Josie Wishart was to accurate as he brought one match back for the 4th years but was not enough to pull them back into contention.

The other Junior Team faired better against Lerwick with debutant and last minute draftee Michael Medici putting them in the lead however a strong middle order of John, Gordon & Gordon were too experienced and Kyle, Shane and Kelvin’s endless running and driving was not enough to stop Lerwick running away with the tie. A valiant effort from Juniors MVP Thomas Marshall saw him snatch a long, tight five setter against Billy after some errorless squash.

2014 February Interclub - Juniors

The Juniors team of Craig Smith, Kelvin Anderson, Thomas Marshall and Josie Wishart lifted the interclub crown for the second time after some hard fought matches across all the teams. Craig played a solid game at seed 4 to win all his matches followed up by a much improved Kelvin whom managed to win 3 out of his 4 matches. Josie had the toughest draw at seed 1 and dug deep but the opposition was too strong for him this time. Their most valuable player had to be Thomas after winning all three matches and a crucial 5 setter against Sandwick’s Ian Smith to tip the tie to the juniors.

It was nearly impossible to pick a most valuable player for Sandwick after Ian, Martyn Robertson at seed 4 and Stuart Copland seed 1 all won two matches and were very close to winning their 3rd match with Martyn only 2 points away from winning each game against Craig and both Ian & Stuart coming back from 2-0 down against both Thomas & Billy Mycock to clinch those matches. However it may just have to go to Glen Tyler, after playing 2 seeds higher than normal which is no mean feat at the best of times never mind when that involves playing 13 games of squash in one day. This mammoth team effort saw Sandwick finished 2nd.

This left both the Lerwick Teams to fight out for 3rd position. Paul Hargreaves the veteran of the A’s looked to hold his team together as he won 3 out of his 4 matches including a thrilling 18-16 game against the expert racquet sports player Brian Hill. Davie Garrick & Leanne Jamieson fought hard but were unable to prevent new comers Gordon MacKay & Karen McElvie swinging it back to the A’s after soon good running by both players. Garry Spence played some solid squash but was unable to prevent Billy from levelling up the tie. Leaving it to Gordon McFarlane’s surgical shots and his normal endless running to see the B’s clinch the tie. Although they ended up joint 3rd after the A’s managed to draw with both the top two teams.

Thanks must go to Joan Smith for another well organised and run event. Look out for more squash events in March.

2013 Nov Interclub - Lerwick A

There was a super turnout at Shetland Squash's 2nd Interleague of the year with 24 fit, young, old and experienced players of all standards, playing squash for 5 hours nonstop. The 4 teams participating were Unst, Juniors, Lerwick and Sandwick. It was great to see new faces playing for the first time. Debutant John Borrill won his 3 matches and Gary Burns won 2 out of 3.

David Sutherland, Unst’s captain, was on excellent form pushing the top 2 players on the day to a 4 and 5 setter. Garry Spence playing for Sandwick had most success with 2 out of 3 wins.

The Junior team, captained and coached by Billy Mycock, seemed to have improved the most since last Interleague and have grown a few inches too! Billy was the only person to be involved in three x 5 setter matches and won 2 out of 3, only losing to top player on the day Ramsay Hogg 9-11, 5-11, 13-11, 16-14, 5-11. It was a delight to have Stuart Copland back on court recovering from his broken leg. At position 4, he went on to win 3 matches out of 3, as did his team mate Josie Wishart who was playing up at number 2 seed for Juniors.

Lerwick were the team that stole the show by winning all their matches. Their scores were 5-1 against Unst, 5-1 against Sandwick and 4-2 against Juniors. Ramsay at 1, Patrick Nicol at 3, Paul Hargreaves at 5 and John Borrill at 6 won all their 3 matches on the day and were ably assisted by Graham Wishart and Davie Garrick.

It was an excellent 5 hours of squash seeing young and old all playing together and having very close matches. Hopefully there will be the same turnout on February 8th 2014, when we hold our next Interleague.

If you have played in the past, or just moved to Shetland and would like to join in the next Interleague, please contact Joan Smith or Billy Mycock. All standards welcome and every player is seeded so you play players of the same standard as you.

2013 September Interclub - Sandwick

2013 March Interclub - Sandwick

Shetland Squash held their 4th Interleague Competition of the year with 20 players competing. All players had 3 games apart from late reserve Frank Garrick who was drafted in at the last minute, who had to play 4 games and won them all!

The Sandwick Team of Joan Smith, Ian Smith, Ben Kerr, Paul Hargreaves and Frank Garrick got off to a flying start, beating Lerwick A 5-0, then beat Lerwick B 5-0. Their last match was against Juniors, who were the youngest and fittest team in the competition. This was always going to be a tough match as the 3 Junior boy’s coached by Billy, have improved their game over the last year and were not going to give up without a fight! Josie Wishart won his match 3-2 and Thomas Marshall went on to win his game 3-1 putting Juniors in the lead. Frank Garrick, Paul Hargreaves and Joan Smith for Sandwick had a tough task ahead of them and had to win all 3 remaining matches. They all did this 3-0, 3-1 and 3-0 to clinch this match and the title.

Special mention must go to these undefeated players today playing at position 5 was Frank Garrick, position 4 was Paul Hargreaves and at position 3 was Thomas Marshall. Joan Smith managed to beat top seeds Kevin Moar, Billy Mycock and Stuart Copland 3-0 to keep a clean sheet in position 1.

Longest game which is normally up to 11 points, was between John Ewart and Rob Jackson, with John winning the game 19-17! Rob went on to win the match 3-1.

Final positions were 1st Sandwick, 2nd Lerwick B,

3rd Juniors, 4th Lerwick A.
